This restaurant is completely slaying the Progressive Indian Cuisine!
October 22, 2016
Yesterday I was at Jaan The Penthouse to check out what they have to offer to Dubai's Indian Restaurant scene. It was the third day of their operation but I promise we could never tell that! Operation and service were impeccable like the staff has been under training under years
Jaan is the latest venture by renowned Indian Chef Farrokh Khambatta and his other ventures in Mumbai include Joss, Umame, Amadeus and Café at the NCPA. Jaan offers what is called a progressive Indian menu. Modern flavors mixed with some really authentic Indian flavors. Here's what all we ate!
We started our meal by ordering drinks and they have a Funky Drinks section in their menu where the drinks have a certain twist! They all sounded very unique from the description but I went ahead and ordered a Smoking Cosmo and The Kitty Brewer. The Cosmo was YUMMY however, I didn't enjoy the other drink so much because it had a rather weird after taste. What was cool about both the drinks though? They served in these uber cool pipe glasses!
For starters they break their menu in two parts - cold and hot starters. We tried the Salmon Kejriwal (no this is not some kind of joke on Arwind Kejriwal but Kejriwal is a type of Indian ingredient/dish with eggs lol) and what they call "Life of Nemo". Life of Nemo was definitely rather amusing because the way the tuna is presented is on top of a fish bowl with real fish swimming in it! I preferred the Salmon Kejriwal over the Life of Nemo in terms of taste though. So cool right? See the images below!
Then we moved on to the hot starters where we ordered the Cherry Wood Chicken and Hunter's Poussin - both chicken dishes. I have to have to have to say the Cherry Wood Chicken was DELICIOUS! The chicken was just perfectly cooked and the level of spice was just right! This will have to be a must order for me every time I visit. For the Hunter's Poussin, the presentation beat the taste for me.
From the selection of mains offered, we ordered the below and next to it is what I thought of each dish:
Sizzling Hummus Chole with Amritsari Kulcha - This is a MUST HAVE! The Chole with the Kulcha with the pomegranate on top was an amazing combination and tasted even better! And where do you get Hummus and Indian style cooked Chole in one dish?
Dhaba highway restaurant Chicken - very very cool presentation and great taste too
Butter Paneer Scramble - This dish was like your typical Paneer dish cooked in the orange masala; the twist was it had Jalapenos - This dish wasn't bad; didn't taste as different as I thought it would
Normandie Dairy Dal - This kaali Dal was seriously one of the most creamiest I ever had! I could have it without any bread it was that good!
One thing I really liked about the mains was that the level of spice was just right! It was enough to add taste to the dish and not excess that it burns your mouth
The desserts here have got to be my hero! We ordered the below
- Shahi Tukda French Toast with Almond Kulfi - The tukda itself was not too sweet and dripping with that sweet sauce like some places have and was stuffed with cheese. The almond kulfi though was the bomb.com - I thought this dessert was better shared with 3 people as it was a bit heavy
- Saffron Panna Cotta with Thandai Mousse and Raspberry Sauce - THIS was the BOMB.COM actually! OH MY GOD I couldn't find one thing wrong with this - the flavors were just so good! You could actually taste the saffron and it was just oh! I miss it melting in my mouth. The raspberry sauce just enhanced the flavors and to kill it they had a chocolate leaf and crumbs of salted caramel - YUMMERS YUMMERS YUMMERS! Absolute MUST ORDER!!!
Thanks again to the Jaan team for having me over. Jaan at the Penthouse is a must must try and the place with its stunning views from the 31st floor would make up for a place perfect for a date or even a celebration with friends or family!
